Slim At Home April 2009
See below for an article in the April 2009 edition of Slim at Home magazine where Robin answers some questions about how Bowen Technique can be helpful with weight related issues, such as water retention and digestive problems.
Bowen Technique
Bowen Technique practitioner Robin Verwest reveals the benefits of this pain-relief-inducing therapy
What is Bowen Technique?
"Bowen was designed by Tom Bowen for treating work-related problems and sports injuries. Gentle rolling moves over muscles and tendons cause subtle adjustments to tension in the muscles and activates connective tissue. This in turn helps the body to regain health and balance at a cellular level. As part of the treatment, brief pauses between moves are made to give the body time to process the work."
How can it treat weight loss?
"Bowen has a direct effect on weight loss through very effective stimulation of the lymphatic system. It uses this to eliminate unwanted toxins and debris and also reduces water retention. It has an indirect effect, too, producing positive psychological benefits for the receiver; it makes them less likely to be triggered into overeating by stressful situations."
Is it painful?
"Bowen isn't painful and it's fairly common for clients to doze off during a treatment as they're so relaxed. It helps to dissipate stored up tension, encourages relaxation and gives the body a chance to heal. This calm and comfortable state of being helps the individual to process the information it gets from the moves. That said, over-treatment could cancel out the benefits if the body becomes overloaded. An important part of Bowen philosophy is 'Less is more'."
What sort of success can you expect from Bowen treatments?
"The most noticeable improvements that can be seen are reduction of water retention, experiencing an overall, general sense of well-being, reduced symptoms of digestive problems, and, of course, physical weight reduction."
How many sessions are recommended?
"In most cases three or four treatments at weekly intervals to give the body time to integrate the Bowen work are sufficient. The therapist would then assess, and, depending on how the individual has responded to treatment, tailor the programme to suit their needs.
How much will it set you back?
A session lasting approximately one hour would cost from £40 - £75.
