Bowen Technique - What is it?
Bowen Technique consists of very gentle, yet effective rolling moves made with the thumbs and fingers on skin across muscles and tendons in specific places.
It offers effective pain relief for many complaints such as neck, back and knee pain, sciatica and frozen shoulder among others. It is suitable for all ages from newborn babies to the elderly and benefits women throughout pregnancy. People with sports injuries and victims of accidents have found that Bowen aids rehabilitation and speeds recovery. Although it is a tool for treating various ailments, many healthy people enjoy Bowen treatments and find them beneficial in maintaining both physical and mental balance and a sense of well-being.
Bowen is relaxing, balances the body and stimulates the body's own natural healing ability. It is an effective way to help the body function at an optimal level of health. Bowen moves at specific points have a significant impact on the way the body holds itself and therefore affects ones posture and alignment.
There are brief rest periods between moves, which give the body time to process the work. Each move sends sensory information to the brain via the nervous system. Once the brain has processed this signal it delivers the corrective information to the necessary muscle or organ, in order to reset the tension patterns throughout your body and begin the healing process. These brief rest periods and the use of minimal intervention are important factors in eliciting a powerful healing effect on the body during a Bowen session.
Just a small number of moves made on the receiver of Bowen Technique will have a much more profound impact on their body and its ability to heal, than doing many moves would.
These are just a few of the wide range of conditions that may respond well to Bowen:
- RSI & Tennis Elbow
- Migraines & Headaches
- Stress & Tension symptoms
- Back pain and sciatica
- Neck & Shoulder problems
- Sports injuries
- Menstrual irregularities
- Pregnancy conditions
- Knee & Ankle problems
- Respiratory problems, Asthma & Hay fever
- Chronic viral fatigue syndrome & M.E.
What to expect during a Bowen treatment
I will discuss any health concerns you have and discuss your medical history before asking you to lie on the treatment table and make yourself comfortable.
I will then perform a series of gentle, non-invasive, rolling moves on your skin across muscles and tendons, leaving the room for short intervals, leaving you to rest and allowing your body time to integrate the work and begin the healing process. Bowen is performed on skin, or over light clothing, in a series of specific moves.
The treatment will last between thirty minutes and one hour, depending on your body's reaction to treatment and the procedures used for your particular complaint. Pauses are required in between moves, to allow for your body's responses. Your responses guide me in just how much to do - each session is unique to the individual.
Generally three treatments are enough to see improvements. However you may need fewer or more, depending on your body's requirements. We can assess the situation from treatment to treatment. It is best for follow-up Bowen treatments to be performed at weekly intervals to build on the work done previously and also give the body time to integrate the previous week's work.
REIKI - What is it?
Reiki works on all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, promotes deep relaxation, helps relieve stress, rids the body of toxins and aids the dissipation of negative energy. Reiki can help balance emotions, enable release of deep emotional patterns, raise vibrational frequencies, strengthen auras, cleanse and balance chakras. Clients have reported that receiving Reiki is usually a very uplifting experience.
REIKI has been practically applied to assist recovery in cases of:
- Asthma
- Digestive Problems
- Migraine
- M.E.
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Stress related problems
- Rheumatic pain
- Back pain
- Sport Injuries
Reiki heals disease from its highest source, from its first cause, and can be hugely beneficial in helping with anxiety, bereavement, high blood pressure, M.S., ovarian cysts, post-natal depression, skin conditions, and self-esteem issues.
Just one Reiki session can benefit the receiver a great deal but to work on deep-rooted issues a course of treatments is recommended to bring symptoms to the surface, rediscover the love of life and ourselves, and remember how to relax.
Healing with Reiki can enhance any other form of treatment, therapy, medicine or natural remedy, often creating a synergic effect.
Reiki is a very gentle yet very powerful method of healing rediscovered from study of ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts by a Japanese minister in the late 19th century. Pronounced 'ray-kee', the term is Japanese for "Universal Life Force Energy":
- Rei means universal, transcendental spirit, mysterious power, and essence.
- Ki means vital life force energy, and is the equivalent of Chinese Chi or Indian Prana.
Reiki energy is normally channeled through the hands, the palm chakras being the most sensitive to our awareness of this type of energy.
Reiki uses sacred focusing techniques, involving symbols taken from Japanese characters to activate the energy for healing of the body and the mind, and promote relaxation. Each symbol targets one of the vibrational bodies. Different symbols resonate with different bodies - one with the physical body, a second the emotional body, a third the mental body and a fourth works on the spiritual body level. Another pulls negative energy out of the various bodies and dissipates it.
What to expect during a Reiki treatment
The client remains fully clothed during treatment, although shoes, glasses (if worn) and any heavy items of clothing or jewelry should be removed. Once prepared, the client will be asked to lie supine and then prone during the treatment. As comfort is an important part of the procedure pillows may be used to provide support wherever required, and blankets will be available in case the client feels cold. Lighting is kept low to enhance the relaxing atmosphere.
You will be invited to lie comfortably on the treatment table and to relax with your eyes closed. I will then place my hands lightly on your body, beginning with the head, followed by the shoulders, and will activate the flow of vibrational energies through use of the Reiki symbols. Reiki energy will begin to flow through my hands and resonate in your body. I will do various light hand positions during the treatment, feeling for any energy blocks and balancing the chakras and meridian pathways.
You may feel calming warmth from my hands, and sometimes a sensation of tingling and/or vibration. Reiki receivers generally report a deep sense of peace and relaxation during the treatment, which stays with them for some time.
A single treatment takes approximately one hour, including a brief five-minute consultation before commencing. For your first Reiki treatment with me this is to find out a little about you and your concerns; if it is a follow-up session it will be used to review how you are feeling in various aspects of your being since your previous treatment.
A full Reiki session covers all of the chakras and bodily organs. The chakras are energy transformation centres, transferring Ki/Chi/energy from the Earth and Heavens (i.e. the Universe) into the human body. Clients sometimes fall asleep or experience an 'out of body' feeling during healings, and may experience an emotional release.
I have been involved in energy work for many years and Reiki specifically for over 10 years. In Asia in 1997 I became aware of Usui Reiki and took Reiki 1 in Kathmandu, Nepal, followed by Reiki 2 the following year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Later, in 2003, I qualified as a Reiki Master in London. I assure confidentiality and my patients leave me with a feeling of calmness and well-being, combined with a sense of revitalisation.
